Chilling! 12-year-olds shouldn't be the trendsetters for pop culture, they should be seeking out content made for older teens and adults that they don't quite understand but yearn to emulate
Kinda confused by this comment. Are you saying the onus is on 12-year-olds to consume the “correct” content? When I was twelve I watched cartoons, which were made for 12-year-olds. How is this any different?
Yes, I agree with all of this. I would like the big platforms to splinter already so I can retvrn to consuming posts and other online content that's aimed at me, an adult. Also when you buy CoD or other online shooters the game should require players to scan their license or birth certificate so they can be sorted into different age tiers for matchmaking!
I shit you not, I was watching a YouTube about electric water heaters yesterday and thinking, I would have found this fascinating as a child. So I'm not even sure you're right about footnote 4!
I am thinking that, when a 12 year old watches water heater repair videos, at that moment they are not looking for MrBeast content. At that moment, they’re looking for adulthood-responsibility content, things that are real and solid and indicate growing up.
Maybe? One of my favorite books as a kid though was "The Way Things Work" which is a) unquestionably a children's book and b) the 80s/90s literary equivalent of these nerdcore Youtube videos
I think the space that TWTW would occupy today on YouTube doesn't get promoted by the algorithms because MrBeast type viral content more easily captures children's attention and produces better engagement metrics. But I don't know for sure, it's just a belief.
I know nothing about the Colleen Ballinger events, but the reference to Miranda Sings reminded me that I used to work with her father back in the 'aughts.

I agree completely

Assuming any of them do, of course.
