And if you want to see breaking news from a legitimate news outlet it's paywalled. I imagine hearing an asteroid is about to hit earth but I can't get any updates bc all the news articles are paywalled. *frantically subscribes to learn time of death*
Max, seriously? I did not realize that anyone actually expected anything more from Twix these days. When I need info on something, I rely more and more on YouTube - especially during big, breaking events like this. Every major network and local TV channel had a livestream, half the newspaper outlets had one and there are countless reputable meteorologists - especially those who specialize in hurricanes - right there at your fingertips. (I like Ryan Hall, Y’all). The only time I’ve been on Twix since Elon bought it where there was anything worth doing was the day Joe dropped out and Kamala became the nominee. And I’m convinced that this *fun* day on Twix stemmed solely from the fact that the news was too much even for that degraded hellhole to destroy before it had a chance to spread.
Just wanted to chime in and say I had the same reaction: Twitter has felt "empty" for a while now but I couldn't believe how bad it was yesterday. All I wanted was crowdsourced pictures of a major weather event!
It's understandable that people focus on the resurgence of Nazis & cranks on twitter this past year, however I think it undersells how much that is just the most prominent facet of all the ways the platform has severely degraded in function & usefulness
Very depressing indeed. As a Tampa resident who was out of town on work while family and friends sheltered in place for the storm, I found Reddits r/tampa and r/hurricane subreddits to be relatively useful for breaking developments, and I supplemented with the live blog from NYT and Tampa Bay Times sites plus the National Hurricane center. Of course, all that requires a lot more work and curation, and most people aren’t gonna do that.
Our gov is illegitimate - my conclusion is also that they want to LOSE. Public opinion is that we hate them. You know what I think might actually make dems looks even worse? If they win and things continue to get worse. So I’m voting 🦋🩵🗳️ but - while I see voting for the c0lonial entity in general as illegitimate - it DOES have repercussions of power. can we get ppl to vote 🩵 becuase ur points are fking real but say it like - we are choosing our OPPONENT and this opponent is easier to move against and make them look like sh*t which ultimately legitimizes the other option we provide - whatever that looks like - but if we are organized enough we get to make demands instead of begging
This is a really good post. I hadn’t really thought about this aspect of twitter and how much it had changed. I think a lot of people didn’t realize, or don’t want to admit, how good it used to be for this. The way you lay it out makes it clear that we’ve lost something substantial and it’s kind of a big deal. Well said.

I couldn’t even find anyone repurposing the old shark hoax image !!

would love to know how many people try to get news from the Happening Now sidebar on x.com in the first place
