Hey, it’s Le pacte des Loups. Loupe means a magnifying glass 😂😂 Also, I did the English subtitles for this movie as part of my job, so I hope you enjoyed them 😉

Thank you for reminding me of a movie I saw in theaters and then haven't thought about in 20 years. This if nothing else clearly affirms that I'm in the target audience for this newsletter.

I remember really liking 'Brotherhood of the Wolf,' though the movie I think loses some of its charm after it kills off Mani. I mean, Mark Dacascos is one of the main reasons to watch it and he's way more charismatic and cool than the bland French lead. I think Mani and Fronsac going up against the Pope would've been a cool sequel btw. Also, your discussion of the videogame-like aspects of the movie are spot on, considering the fact that Gans would go on to make what was at the time easily the best cinematic videogame adaptation in 'Silent Hill' (2006).

The of Beast of Gévaudan gets a brief mention early in Mike Duncan's biography of the Marquis de Lafayette and I immediately thought of this film when I read it.

I have a very fond memory of this movie, watching it with three other friends at the cinema:

There's a line, towards the end of act II I believe, when the person trying to wrap up the scandal announces that they killed the wolf. My friend Felipe shouted "The End", and we all laughed because we were having a really hard time getting through this and were pretty bored.

It was gorgeous, I'll give it that, but pacing, plot and earnestness wise, it has nothing on Big Trouble in Little China.
