Was trying to figure out who Theo Von was after his Bernie Sanders interview (which was pretty good) and mistakenly fell victim to a joke post claiming he's that guy from Righteous Gemstones. Turns out that's someone else (Tony Cavalero).
I had never heard of Theo Von until my girlfriend showed me some of his standup clips. He's funny!
Then I saw the (let's say) internet circles he runs in, and I was surprised, since my gf certainly isn't into Joe Rogan or these other "dipshits" you mention. (She would certainly be placed into the "woke" category by someone that didn't know her.) We watched about half of his Trump interview and it was interesting. He managed to build real rapport in the first few minutes, asked interesting questions, and had--at times--real engagement with Trump. For how "online" the Harris campaign is, I think they are underestimating the appeal of the platform these "dipshits" provide.
I’m not a big fan of bullshit prankster humor, but lumping Theo in here is stupid. From what you can find on him, he’s a simple guy who likes to talk with his friends and crack jokes. And he’s pretty humble. The others, sure, maybe. Out of curiosity, I’m wondering what this article or piece serves to do? Uncovering truth? Exposing people? Shedding light? I get it that it’s a creative work of opinion, essentially. To me, it comes across angry and juvenile, which is ironic, because a lot of people who’ll write this would say the same about their target.
in my opinion the piece is pretty generous to theo, who i agree is a simple guy who likes to crack jokes! but i'm not really the one lumping him in w/ nelk or the paul brothers, he does that himself by going on their podcasts (and vice versa). as the piece says, just because he's not a dipshit himself doesn't mean his audience isn't mostly dipshit-americans of the kind trump is trying to reach.
as to your second question, the article serves to educate readers regarding the number of words in the "controversies" section of various streamers.
Theo is absolutely a dipshit, he's just more of a simple/lovable/goofy/charming one instead of the incredibly obnoxious variety the others revel in.
He will absolutely talk to anyone and everyone, which is part of his appeal, but I don't think it's subtle that he's also a fan of Trump. His "just asking questions" type approach seems to be less agenda-oriented than Rogan, though.
Searching for any of these clowns on a social media site, especially Youtube, will absolutely wreck whatever recommended videos they surface via their arcane and likely evil algorithms so you're right to not
Calling people dipshits doesn’t negate the genuine populist movement happening, bypassing the main stream media and going direct to podcasters with huge audiences. This shift is actually interesting.
I watched Theo Von's episode with Bassem Youssef and it was great because he listened and he admitted he didn't know anything, which would probably be the case of most of his audience. He wasn't afraid to ask dumb questions and Bassem was very graceful. I read hundred of comments that implied he has really changed people's minds and it made them understand.
It's hard to ignore a population so polluted with misinformation by unleashed social media algorithms. Any education in critical thinking is lost to this population. They are formulating real and firm beliefs from opinion influencers and hucksters out for a quick, easy buck and narcissistic popularity.
Unfortunately, young men of voting age are saturated with the likes of Trump and RFKJr, thinking they have 'good ideas' or 'good policies' based on interviews they've heard on podcasts and social media that don't actually reveal potential solutions for social and economic issues through policy. Interviews can be fraught with mysogynistic, racist, and/or conspiracy banter, but those factors don't seem important to listeners.
This population is not looking further than the front door to learn it's a house of cards.
Sure, teen antics play a role and we hope they grow out of the phase and grow up to be responsible. But what of the adults who have proven otherwise? The adults wearing diapers and toilet paper on their ears for Trump and carrying 'JD Vance jizz' cups? The adults threatening violence if they don't get their way in a free democratic election?
My elderly parents died worried for this country. I understand that with the full weight of being a parent and seeing what the social media machine is doing to my own kids and their peers.
so *that's* what the deal with "Happy Dad" is. saw the inexplicable Vance picture with the stuff, and have seen their merch on at least one dipshit teen, but didn't make the connection that it's a side hustle of these guys

You are so right he is a dead ringer for kief - maybe a little less soft spoken but otherwise. Well not quite as nude either
i like the childlike wonder with which trump asks theo von if cocaine “has a better up” than alcohol
I come to Max Read for the reporting, opinion writing, and criticism; I pay for the shitposting

fair enough

If he was “just a simple guy who likes to crack jokes”, he would never be interviewing Donald Trump, that much is CLEAR.
This is invaluable because my brain is internet polluted enough that I dare not research these goons.

I think I’ve met about 20 Theo Vons n my life. He’s the only one who got famous

I don’t think anything will top Trump bringing Lil Pump to a rally and introducing him as “Lil Pimp”
The DNC has been doing this foryears.
the theo von bernie clips from the other week were very winning and he was spitting in this one https://x.com/okimstillhungry/status/1823810329694101907
ya, great bit about medical debt. he'd be an ok hang!

Coming here courtesy of Scriptnotes, and just wanted to say that the recent Netflix film Fair Play is a spectacular Halogencore film.
To be fair Theo Von had a very interesting/balanced interview with Bernie Sanders. he's not overly partisan
